Assuming you haven’t grown weary of me talking about how the global pandemic is impacting podcasting… I want to know how it’s impacting you and your own podcasting story. Better together, you know?
I feel like I’ve been talking about how the global pandemic is impacting podcasting for the past 27 years. I know it’s only been a couple of weeks, but it sure feels longer to me.
But I really want to know is this: how is this stupid virus impacting you and your podcasting efforts?
I feel it’s important to keep bringing up the realities we already are and soon will face even more as the pandemic continues. I try to keep my thoughts centered on our industry. I’m not a virologist, so I’m unqualified to give practical health advice to anyone. But I do feel it my charge to bring up things all working podcasters should be thinking of. And right now this stupid virus is placing a giant diversion in future-forward thoughts. Hence my focus recently,
The novel coronavirus pandemic either has or will hit all podcasters. And the impact will be unevenly distributed, affecting some more than others.
I want to hear your stories of how it’s impacting you and your podcasting efforts.
I also want to help you any way that I can.
I’ll start. We here at ShEvo Studios are fine. Neither we nor our immediate families have contracted COVID19, at least not that I’ve heard. My lovely wife Sheila Dee has had an off-and-on low fever for about a week, but the health professionals she’s spoken with aren’t concerned, though she is on self-imposed isolation. We have a grocery store across the street that still has food in it, so we’re fine.
Simpler Media, the podcast consultancy I run, is also doing fine. The small distributed team members that make the sausage for our clients are all virus-free, so the machinery we’ve put in place is working. I won’t speak to the personal lives of the team because, well… that’s not my place. Luckily, we’ve not seen a negative business impact. In fact, we’re onboarding two new clients this week and have two more prospects on the hook for new services. So clearly the businesses we provide services for aren’t slowing down. Yet.
But I know that’s not the case for everyone. I know that a lot of people — podcast hosts or podcast service providers — are already struggling with the changed world. Some are finding advertising deals aren’t being renewed. Some are seeing a reduction in direct support from listeners. Others have lost the day jobs that allow them the funds necessary to make their hobby or to put their art out for all of us to enjoy.
I want to hear and to share those stories. Stories of negative, positive, or neutral impact. Whatever is happening — or isn’t happening — to your life as a podcaster, I’m asking you to tell me. Grab your microphone, kick out a quick stream-of-conscious update, and send it to me.
Hearing from you on this topic helps me emotionally. And I think other working podcasters might also get some benefit from hearing the stories of how other podcasters are affected and coping. I want to collect and compile these stories, probably putting them out as bonus episodes. Or maybe something else. It all depends on what you send me.
But please: do send me something. I want to know what’s happening out there with my podcasting buddies. And I consider you, a listener and/or reader of my content, a podcasting buddy of mine. It doesn’t matter if you’re a decade-plus podcaster like me who might already be connected to me in some way, or if you’ve only been at it for a few weeks and have never reached out to me before. I know what you’re thinking. “I can’t really afford it!” “But I don’t want to bother you with silly questions.” Or something very much like that.
Put those thoughts out of your mind. I am genuinely offering my advice, guidance, and direction for free. This is me giving back to working podcasters like you who listen to my show every day, four times a week. The least I can do is answer some questions for you.
